Conservative Border Police
Later today David Cameron will announce that the Party has appointed the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Stevens to lead a working group on creating a border police force. By scrapping the ID card scheme and saving money in the Home Office the Party would pay for a single force.
Currently the borders are managed by 6 agencies: Revenue and Customs, the Immigration Service, the security services, harbour police, SOCA (Serious and Organised Crime Agency), and the Metropolitan Police.
What a brilliant idea – getting rid of the ID card scheme, which is a complete waste of money, and actually taking strong action in protecting our borders. By creating one force (of around 10,000 people) it will cut down communication error, bureaucracy and save money.
It is ideas like this that will put us back into power – lets just hope that Labour don’t steal this idea as well! Not only is this a great policy, but it will also appeal to the right wing people in the Party.

Hmmmmm don’t know how effective this will be really… but then again i’m sure he knows more than me about whats effective and generally EU countries with such forces are very effective.

Anything is better than IDs, plus he will be saving the country, which is always a positive thing to do. If Labour do steal the idea it only shows that it is a good idea and that we have got them running scared, which is deffinetely a step in the right direction.

As much as I love DC, I don’t really see how this is anything much more than consolidating our current forces under one banner. How much would that really achieve? Although it would scrap visible divisions and bureaucracy they may simply be transferred in to the new system. Also, although I’m not a fan of the ID card scheme and would oppose any such measure, proponents of the scheme would say that ID cards could be used for more than just immmigration problems; identity theft, benefit fraud etc. Dave needs to have some other complementary solutions that would ensure that no arguments can be made in favour of such a draconian scheme as ID cards.

I too am against the massive waste of money and infringement on our rights that is the ID card scheme, but then this isn’t really the main issue here.
I think that one force to control the borders, as in the US (US Customs and Border Protection – part of the Department for Homeland Security) would be much more effective than the many forces tasked with controlling different aspects of our borders at the moment.
Yes Eamonn, it would be consolidating the existing experienced forces, but if it was properly implemented it has the potential to be far more powerful than the current system. It would be easier to initiate and coordinate operations if they were all part of one police force, and with the reduced bureaucracy, it would enable quicker responses to intelligence information and may too be more economically efficient, which will please all Tories surely!
