UCL Conservatives in “The Times”

News of our Society song has been published in The Times. The People section written by Hugo Rifkind features a section on us:

The Conservative Society at UCL has just posted the society song on its website. Sung to the tune of John Brown’s Body, the lyrics begin: “Maggie Thatcher walks on water, Maggie Thatcher walks on water, Maggie Thatcher walks on water, When the blue revolution comes.”

The chorus centres on the words “Tory Tory Alleluia”, and the second verse rhymes “Winston Churchill beat the Nazis” with, um, “Winston Churchill beat the Nazis”. “Many of you have asked for the lyrics,” the website says. Bright bunch, Conservative students.

Not the nicest piece that has ever been written on us, but we are mentioned in The Times! Any publicity is very good publicity I hope you will agree!

  1. I read his musings with a rather large amount of displeasure. Nothing to be worried about though really; the man is a bit of a tit and his column normally doesn’t amount to much other than celebrity speculations anyway.

Hey that’s really cool! Very true any publiciity is good publicity, he is probably just upset that he couldn’t come up with a better version of our song and that he has been out witted by a bunch of students.
In addition he has just informed the nation of our song, has basically saved us a job.

  3. I don’t think it was that bad a song? It is catchy and very easy to learn!

  4. Perhaps people all over london will take up our song?

  5. Laura-Rose Says:

We could round up a load of people and go and sing it outside of The Times’ head office. See what there reaction is.

  6. I second that Laura!

  7. Laura-Rose Says:

Thank you Eamonn! Always glad of your support.

  8. Stuart Barfield Says:

I think that is just his humour, which is evident if you read his other articles.

    Good publicity!

  9. I think it says something about the journalist that he has to trawl through internet blogs to find something to write about in his column.

  10. What’s this ‘our’ song? The 2nd verse…..
