Conservative Future have launched a special campaign to create a petition against the ID card scheme.
The campaign is fronted by Boris Johnson who has left an amusing, but important message for the campaign website.

We, the undersigned, call on the Government to scrap their ID card scheme, which is a waste of money, an invasion of privacy and won’t prevent terrorist attacks, illegal immigration, identity fraud or human trafficking.
Instead, we want the Government to make better use of the money by providing more prison places, more drug rehab in prisons, and setting up a new border police force.

“Only the Liberal Democrats can be relied upon to defend civil liberties and be a real and effective opposition to this Government. At the final stage of the Act’s passage, the Conservatives – and crossbenchers in the Lords – gave in and backed the Government in key parliamentary votes that will mean:
(a) Identity cards will be compulsory for anyone getting a new or renewed passport on or after January 1st 2010 – which means that we could well have compulsory (in effect) ID cards ahead of the next general election, which need not happen until May 2010.
(b) People who apply for new or renewed passports before January 1st 2010 will have their names and details put on the new national identity register (although they will not be forced to have an ID card). It is not certain yet when this will apply from as the Government have not said when the national identity register will be in place.”
Conservatives..not as liberal as they’re cracked up to be.
