A Welcome Hold
The victory of Nicolas Sarkozy in France is yet another bit of welcome news to celebrate this Bank Holiday Monday. It is the proof that, even after 12 years in power, the UMP is capable of winning elections by appealing to common sense, an efficient market economy, safety and Europe. The Left’s usual promises of greater planning, social engineering and hostility to capital have been soundly defeated. This is testimony to the increasing awareness among the population that in a globalised world only market economies can thrive and remain competitive, as well as being peaceful societies.
With Angela Merkel’s government in Germany, Sarko’s victory places another blue flag on the map of Europe, with Britain hopefully coming soon back into the Conservative family where it rightfully belongs.
