Campaigning??
At UCL we not only enjoy a range of guest speaker events and socials, but we also try and help with the grassroot campaigning. The young legs and spirited hearts of our members assist with leafleting, canvassing, the running of street stalls and the general spread of sound conservative principles.
We currently assist with both local and national level elections. Obviously, we have the big one coming up, the one both Blair and Brown have denied us… the General Election.
Bets are that Gordon will ask Her Majesty for a general election around March so it coincides with local council elections in early May. This is because Labour cannot fund two election campaigns as they are fully mortgaged and are not receiving the level of support from individuals and unions that they have done in the past. As such, there are now new legislations on election campaigning. Candidates will be strictly monitored from January and any spending more than approximately £27k will be told off.
UCL is situated within the Holborn & St. Pancras parliamentary constituency. This is a large slender constituency stretches from Covent Garden in the south to Highgate in the North and has one of the largest and most diverse electorates in London. The constituency contains some of the most famous institutions in England, ranging from the British Museum and British Library, King’s Cross and Euston stations, Primrose Hill and Camden Market, Parliament Hill and Highgate Cemetery, UCL (the 4th best University in the World), other almost as good universities and of course, yours truly, the UCLU Conservative Society .
UCL sits within the Bloomsbury ward, there are 10 other wards, Camden Town with Primrose Hill, Cantelowes, Gospel Oak, Haverstock, Highgate, Holborn & Covent Garden, Kentish Town, King’s Cross, Regent’s Park, St Pancras & Somers Town.
Our incumbent MP is the notorious Frank (I still live in a council house) Dobson. Not only is he a Labour MP, but he is a bad one at that. Thankfully, we have a fantastic Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC), George Lee. You may have seen his posters around the constituency. There is so much to say about George, that I am going to direct you to his website! www.mygeorgelee.com
Obviously our priority is in our home seat supoorting George Lee, but where possible we also lend our support to Chris Philp who is the PPC in our neighbouring constituency of Hampstead and Kilburn, and Richard Merrin in Hornsey and Wood Green.
So get involved. Not only can you change local politics but you can change national politics. Help us on one of the below action days. If it is your first time, don’t worry, it’s easy! Just shadow one of the more experienced members, ask questions and enjoy the opportunity to meet new people who are genuinely interested in politics. More often than not you even get a pub lunch at the end of your shift! Naturally if you have any questions just email us: conservative.society@ucl.ac.uk
