Information
At UCL we not only enjoy a range of guest speaker events and socials, but we also try and help with the grassroot campaigning. The young legs and spirited hearts of our members assist with leafleting, canvassing, the running of street stalls and the general spread of sound Conservative principles.
We assist with internal UCL Union, local governmental and national governmental elections. Obviously, we had the General Election on 6th May 2010 and our members were dedicated to supporting a Conservative government. We helped our local PPC George Lee almost double the Conservative vote and indeed some of our members stood as Conservative local councillors. We travelled to various constituencies both within London and nationally to assist with the campaign efforts and provided dozens of volunteers to Conservative Campaign Headquarters to take part in the epic GenVA Telephone Campaigns. Our members took part in door to door canvassing and deliveries, held street stalls, attended launch events and acted as ‘tellers’ on polling day itself.
For many of our members this was the first general election they could help out and vote in. Hold hands help the many first time campaigners and everyone who helped enjoyed themselves, made new friends and developed new skills. Shadowing was a great opportunity for new members to meet more experienced Conservatives, ask questions and meet new people who are genuinely interested in politics. More often than not a Saturday morning’s work was meet with a pub lunch treat from the person you were campaigning for!

Our Constituency
UCL is situated within the Holborn & St. Pancras parliamentary constituency. This is a large slender constituency stretching from Covent Garden in the south to Highgate in the North and has one of the largest and most diverse electorates in the UK. The constituency contains some of the most famous institutions in England, ranging from the British Museum and British Library, King’s Cross and Euston stations, Primrose Hill and Camden Market, Parliament Hill and Highgate Cemetery, UCL (the 4th best University in the World!), LSE, Kings College, many other Universities of London and of course, yours truly, the UCLU Conservative Society!
UCL itself sits within the Bloomsbury ward, there are 10 other wards, Camden Town with Primrose Hill, Cantelowes, Gospel Oak, Haverstock, Highgate, Holborn & Covent Garden, Kentish Town, King’s Cross, Regent’s Park, St Pancras & Somers Town.
Our incumbent MP is the notorious Frank (I still live in a council house) Dobson. Not only is he a Labour MP, but he is a bad one at that. Thankfully, at the last general election we had a fantastic Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC), George Lee. The Society continues to look forward to helping out local Conservatives in future elections!

Student Union Politics
As important as general elections are, members have recently wetted their appetite for politics closer to home, within 25 Gordon Street! Traditionally the haunt of socialists and revolutionaries, our members are now filling through the ranks of UCL Union and NUS. Indeed it is a tradition for the President to run for the finance sabbatical position!
Despite what some people say, student politics does matter. It is a great opportunity to brush up on your diplomacy skills and fill your CV. If you want further information then please contact the President, Matthew Corner (Email) and the Campaigns Officer, Jack Aldridge.
