By-election in Highgate

April 1st, 2008 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning No Comments »

Due to the unexpected resignation of our Conservative Councillor, we are fighting a by-election in Highgate ward - Camden Council. The election is on May 1st 2008. The candidate is Richard Merrin, friend and sponsor of the Society - we must come out and help Richard battle the Liberals!

We have been invited to an upcoming campaigning day:

Saturday April 19th - “Do you fancy a trip to the hills of Highgate with the boys and girls of UCL for an action day comprising of some canvassing, leafletting and a major evening booze up

Let me know and I will roll the red carpet out and make sure that you all leave the area with major hangovers”

More information to come soon - in the meantime join his Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=14943881538

Campaigning with London North West

February 21st, 2008 Oliver Cooper Posted in Campaigning No Comments »

Conservative Future can be a powerful local campaigning machine.  That’s why, when I was elected area chair for London North West, we put campaigning at the heart of our new agenda.  We’ll be organising monthly campaign days in our closest seats, coordinating campaign days organised by local CF branches in the area, and, of course, helping to promote the Back Boris revolution in this part of our city.

For now, though, our meat and drink has been campaigning for byelections, which have been coming thick and fast!  We’ve had one campaign day in Harrow’s Marlborough ward, which goes to the poll on 13th March and which should see the Conservatives add another councillor in the borough.

Last night, for the second time, we sent a team campaigning in Fortune Green, in our very own borough of Camden.  The ward is voting today, so it was vitally important for us to remind all our loyal, and painstakingly canvassed, supporters to turn out!  In addition to CFers from across the area, we were joined by the effervescent JP Floru (pictured below, right, with me and our Campaigns Director Edward Hallam, centre), a European Parliament candidate for London and organiser of Freedom Week.

We will be continuing to organise similar campaigns across the area.  For news about London North West, and details of our campaigning activities, social events, social action projects, and everything else we’ll be getting up to, feel free to email me or join our Facebook group.  With your help, we’ll be able to make north-west London bluer than it’s ever been!

Cheltenham Winter Campaign day

October 21st, 2007 Laura-Rose Saunders Posted in Campaigning No Comments »

On Saturday November 10th Cheltenham Conservatives are holding an action day. The day will quick off at 10am and we will visit various areas of cheltenham delivering the lastest issue of In Touch.

Throughout the day tea, coffee and cakes, as well as lunch will be provided. Over the summer we had a by-election in Cheltenham and with no small effort from UCL Conservatives we got our candidate, Antonia Noble, elected and increased our majority in the respective areas. it would be fantastic to continue the momentum and achieve the same result with Mark come the next general election. At present we have a Lib Dem MP but we want to change this and give Mark not just a small majority but a huge one and try and turn Cheltenham into a Conservative safe seat.

Later this term Mark will be one of the panelists on our Question Time event, and this would be an excellent opportunity to meet him prior to this event. Cheltenham is easily accessable from London by Coach, train and car, email me for more details.

The event is on Facebook so please RSVP if you can come the date is in reading week (well UCL’s reading week atleast) so it should make it easier for people to come. For more details email me (laurarosesaunders@hotmail.com) details will also appear on www.bristolgloscf.com

Cheltenham By-Election

August 18th, 2007 Laura-Rose Saunders Posted in Campaigning 4 Comments »

After the sad death of one of Cheltenham’s County Councillors, August 16th 2007 saw the by-election in the Cheltenham wards of Lansdown, Warden Hill and Park, an area which covers around one fifth of Cheltenham. In the weeks leading up to polling day it became obvious that it was a two horse race between the Liberal Democrat Candidate Martin Dunne; personally back by Martin Horwood MP, and the Conservative Candidate Antonia Noble.

Throughout the campaign the Lib Dems used a variety of techniques to try and discredit Antonia and her policies. The main issue throughout the campaign was not, as one would have expected, the issue of flooding and flood prevention following the crisis earlier in the summer but the concern over ‘Parkway station’, a liberal democrat idea to create a super station between Cheltenham and Gloucester. This idea was further backed by the Liberal Democrat spokesman for Transport, John Cordwell, implying that Parkway station would go ahead regardless of public opinion. Once public support for the idea turned against them the Lib Dems began shifting the blame onto us claiming that we would be closing Cheltenham Spa station should Parkway go ahead, that the scheme was our idea originally and even going to great lengths to publicly disassociate themselves from their spokesman for Transport.

After weeks of campaigning, polling day dawned with the keener members of Cheltenham Conservatives kicking the day off with a 5:45am leaflet drop. Somewhat later in the day I set out leafleting, soon joined by Nick Roche-Kerr and Adam Sawyer of UCL, Phil Jardine of Coventry CF and Gordon Taylor of Gloucestershire CF. We spent the day leafleting, door knocking and generally urging the public to ‘Vote for Antonia Noble’ and ‘The party who keep their promises’.

Once the others had left I was joined by former UCL Conservatives President Richard Jackson. Richard and I made the final push urging the public to vote, had they not done so already, before the stations closed at 10pm. Once the sun had set and the polls had closed Richard made his departure to Hereford while, I sped off to ‘The Count’. After many attempts, all of which were in vain, to sweet talk, bribe and generally convince the guard to let me attend ‘The Count’, I was left waiting outside with a few fellow Conservatives, while waiting we discussed the campaign, Lib Dem tactics and the like.

Shortly after 11pm the results were announced: Green Party- 184, Labour- 226, Liberal Democrats- 1605, Conservatives- 2208. Not only had Antonia won she had managed to increase our lead to over 600 and proved that running a good, honest campaign is the best way to play it. This was also a positive boost in the campaign to turn Mark Coote PPC into Mark Coote MP.

On behalf of Cheltenham Conservatives I would like to personally thank all those who helped out, you were indispensable and on behalf of UCL Conservatives I would like to congratulate Antonia and wish her all the best in her term of office, may it be a long and successful one!

Ealing Southall By-Election

June 30th, 2007 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning 4 Comments »

Following the sad death of Piara Khabra there will be a by-election in Ealing Southall. It will take place on 19th July - a very short campaign. Traditionally this has been a Labour stronghold but as you all know in a by-election it’s everything to play for. This is a by-election where CF can make a real and lasting impact and really cement our newly acquired reputation as a campaigning powerhouse.

We are the first off the blocks and we have selected local businessman Tony Lit as our candidate for the election on July 19th. Meanwhile Labour are still arguing over all women shortlists and the Lib Dems are still trying to get Ming to select a candidate instead of talking about the time he was in the Olympics over and over and over.

The usual campaigning day programme will apply, meet at 10:30 and have an inspiring talking from the candidate, then spend a couple of hours leafleting, back to a local hostelry for some ales and lunch (on CCHQ) the out again at about 14:00 of a couple more hours and then returning to the pub for more ales.

More information can be found on the Party Volunteer Task Force site and the Facebook Group (more up to date). CF members from all around the Country will be getting involved and there will be a lot of drinking! I list the various campaign days below including ones UCL Conservatives Committee members will attend.

CF Action Day in Tooting

May 20th, 2007 Luca Posted in Campaigning, Event Reviews 1 Comment »

Tooting

Conservative Future brought out 70 people to the streets of Tooting yesterday, delivering leaflets in various wards. The day was a roaring success, with thousands of envelopes going through voters’ letterboxes. These contained Mark Clarke’s leaflet on crime and a survey which will help the Conservatives gauge the support for their stances in such a key seat as Tooting.During the day Mark also announced that he will not be re-standing as CF Chairman because he wants to dedicate all of his energies to winning Tooting.

The excellent weather was a welcome help from the elements, a nice break from the days of pouring rain we witnessed in the past weeks. It also allowed us to use the comfortable beer garden at the pub, which meant we could get to know the other members of our teams better without having to shout over the pub noise.

Mark provided a great lunch and a very generous bar tab, which was a great way to wash down a hard day’s work. Post-campaigning discussion was conspicuously lubricated with glorious pitchers of Soames.

A big thank you to Mark, CF, Tooting Conservatives and all those who came out to make this action day a great success and a great step forward for the Conservative Party. We will definitely be looking forward to more campaigning and more socialising over Soames’.

UCL Union to stay with the NUS…

March 23rd, 2007 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning No Comments »

Last night an EGM was held to vote on whether we should stay in the National Union of Students. Unfortunately the vote was once again inquorate, which means that the requirement of 200 people to attend the meeting and vote was not met.

Do you think we should be in the NUS?

Join Boris…

March 20th, 2007 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning 3 Comments »

BorisConservative Future have launched a special campaign to create a petition against the ID card scheme.

The campaign is fronted by Boris Johnson who has left an amusing, but important message for the campaign website.

Have a look and sign the petiton: http://www.joinboris.com/.

And you can join the Facebook group here.

We, the undersigned, call on the Government to scrap their ID card scheme, which is a waste of money, an invasion of privacy and won’t prevent terrorist attacks, illegal immigration, identity fraud or human trafficking.

Instead, we want the Government to make better use of the money by providing more prison places, more drug rehab in prisons, and setting up a new border police force.

Kentish Town By-election - Polling Day!

December 7th, 2006 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning 2 Comments »

Well the day is finally upon us, it is now down to the people of Kentish Town to get out and vote blue! This by-election is too close for all four of the Parties (us, Labour, Lib Dem’s and Greens).

Polls close at 10:00pm and I hope to have the result up on this blog by midnight. Make sure you check late tonight/early tomorrow to find out who won!

Richard has also asked me to thank everyone from the Society who has given up their Saturdays to come and help! We have made a real difference to the campaign and he would not have been able to do it without you! Well done and lets pray for the Conservatives to shock everyone tonight!

Campaigning in Kentish Town - Final week!

December 4th, 2006 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning 5 Comments »

It was the final Saturday before polling day and we got out in force! It was also NHS action day, which proved to be a prefect addition to our campaign issues. A large group of UCL Conservatives came along and joined forces with the group on the high street. It was a perfect time to alert people to the issues of crime, the environment and protecting our hospitals.

In total there were around 20 Conservatives on the high street, giving out balloons, getting signatures for the NHS petition and just talking to the local community. The other Parties turnout was pathetic. Labour had 6 people out, Lid Dem’s 5 and the greens had 2. The Lib Dem candidate was helped by Simon Hughes MP coming along, but he turned out to be useless (more to follow on that…).

A special mention must go to Tim Barnes, Chairman of the TRG who helped arrest a shoplifting youth. A middle aged women had decided to stand up to this young man (who was stealing from her shop) and had been smacked across the face several times for it, while the youth was trying to escape. She just held on and it is one of the bravest things I have ever witnessed. It ended with Tim and another man wrestling him to the ground until the police could get there. Well done to them both.

All in all the Conservatives outflanked and outmanoeuvred the other parties for the 6th week running. The 7th December could be quite a shock; for everyone!

November 30th, 2006 Richard Jackson Posted in Campaigning No Comments »

The UCL Tory Soc Committee is calling a 3 line whip!

Its the final Saturday campaign day left before the by-election, on the 7th December, and UCL Conservatives will be massing to take on the Lib Dem/Green machine! Come along for an assault of biblical proportions; we will be manning a huge street stall to help spread the conservative message before people go to the polls!

It is NHS action day so we will giving out flyer’s and information plus getting people to sign a petition against the cuts (especially the Royal Free hospital just north of Kentish Town!).

Never been up before? Don’t worry; you are more than welcome. We will start the day with bacon butties before going out on the high street. The day will end with a large lunch in the local gastro pub. Come along!

Meet Kentish Town tube station @ 9:45am
