First Year Representatives

November 23rd, 2007 Starbuck Posted in Society News No Comments »

Every year the Committee chooses a person or persons in the Society to become first year representatives. This serves many purposes:

  • To reward reliable members who come to all the events and help out whenever they can (e.g. campaigning).
  • To help set the Society up for the future by educating the first year rep(s) on how to run UCL Conservatives
  • And to help produce fresh ideas

It is a pleasure to announce in accordance with the UCLU Conservative Committees wishes that the following are UCLU Conservative Committee ‘First Year Reps’ and thus Committee Members:

Hannah-Ruth Bysouth
Serene John-Richards

Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary!

November 20th, 2007 Richard Jackson Posted in Society News No Comments »

On this day the country is united in sending our best wishes to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh on their 60th Wedding Anniversary. The Society wishes them all the best for now, and in the future.

To mark the occasion the Palace has released 60 facts about the Wedding. These include:

  • The Queen is the first British monarch to have celebrated a diamond wedding anniversary.
  • Philip had two stag parties the night before the wedding - the first at the Dorchester to which the press were invited and the second with his closest friends at the Belfry Club.
  • The grave of the Unknown Warrior was the only stone that was not covered by the special carpet in the Abbey. The day after the wedding, Princess Elizabeth followed a Royal tradition started by her mother, of sending her wedding bouquet back to the Abbey to be laid on this grave.
  • William McKie, the Abbey organist, had been summoned to the Palace four days before the wedding so that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret could sing the descant to Crimond to him so that he could note it down as no other copy was available.
  • The two Royal kneelers, used during the service, were covered in rose pink silk. They were made from orange boxes, due to war time austerity, and date stamped 1946.
  • About 10,000 telegrams of congratulations were received at Buckingham Palace.
  • The Royal couple received over 2,500 wedding presents from well-wishers around the world. Most were put on display for a few days in a charity exhibition at St James’s Palace.
  • The cake was nine feet high in four tiers, with painted panels of the armorial bearings of both families, and included the monograms of bride and groom, sugar-iced figures to depict their favourite activities, and regimental and naval badges. The cake was cut using the Duke’s Mountbatten sword, which was a wedding present from the King.
  • Although he was the Queen’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh was not crowned or anointed at the Coronation ceremony in 1953. He was the first subject to pay Homage to Her Majesty, and kiss the newly crowned Queen by stating “I, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, do become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks. So help me God.”

The Taxpayers’ Alliance

November 17th, 2007 Richard Jackson Posted in Society News 1 Comment »

TPA

If you attend our events you have probably noticed a very short man who attends and causes trouble! Well his name is Tim Aker, and he is in fact a great guy, but also the Grassroots Coordinator for the Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA). For those familiar with the group skip ahead to information on joining.

The TPA is a terrific group that is now getting the recognition it richly deserves. Founded in 2004 to represent taypayers and to fight for lower taxes it. The have some basic aims:

  • To reverse the perception that big government is necessary and irreversible
  • To explain the benefits of a low tax economy
  • To give taxpayers a voice in the corridors of power

To this end, the TaxPayers’ Alliance will:

  • Oppose all tax rises
  • Oppose EU tax harmonisation
  • Seek the abolition of inheritance tax
  • Criticise all examples of wasteful and unnecessary spending
  • Champion opportunities for votes on tax and spend

Every year they publish ”the bumper book of Government waste” plus this year the TPA playing cards, which some of you won at the TRG quiz a while back! They also have a very good blog, which has now got a place on the front page of our one!

I can’t recommend this group more and plead with you to join and support them - membership is FREE so don’t miss out and sign up here.  Watch the video below to see a campaign ad put out by the TPA. JOIN UP NOW!

    Conservative Party National Convention

September 25th, 2007 Richard Jackson Posted in Society News No Comments »

“The National Convention is some 900 strong with every association chairman (625) plus approx 150 representatives of the 10 regions and 44 areas. There are 100 places for members of recognised organisations. Members of the Board and immediate previous Nat Convention office holders are also members. The National Convention holds its AGM each Spring and elects its officers who sit on the Board of the Party. It also meets in the autumn for its half yearly meeting. 66% majority of its members are needed for rule changes and in some cases this percentage has to be matched by 66% of MPs.

It provides a focus for views of Party members and acts as a link between the Party Leader and its members.”

As current members know UCL has a seat on the National Convention for being one of the largest branches in the country. As our President Starbuck is unable to attend the Conference (too busy preparing the amazing events we have this year) Laura-Rose will be taking the seat while I represent the Student TRG.

This is an amazing chance to grill the leadership of the Party and espcially the Party Board. Please can members leave themes or questions they may have and would want asked.
