I was a great pleasure to be outside Downing Street as David Cameron was driven up to his new front door.

A congregation of us then rushed back to The Red Lion pub to watch his speech on the television, and moments later the pub filled with MP’s, future cabinet members and Nick Robinson!

It will go down as one of my favourite nights in history.

I hadn’t quite realised just how hacky those two are. My thinking was this: that a leadership contest between two brothers would become a symbol of petty in-fighting and squabbling (exactly what parties strive to avoid after narrow defeats). This has certainly proved right but I accept that I had too much faith in the Milibands they are clearly far pettier than I thought.

When it comes to Mandy I was merely making the point that commentators suggesting that (considering he has broken with constitutional precedent let alone something as flimsy as party policy) he might find a way of running are talking nonsense.

Though you’re right about Mandy not running… he can’t. The Labour Rule Book only allows MPs to run for Labour leadership… no MEPs, no Councillors, and no Lord Mandelson.
