Yesterday, July 1st, saw Canada celebrate its 141st birthday. The biggest celebrations, of course, occurred in the federal capital and I was thrilled by the opportunity to experience this day of national pride first-hand. Monday saw the sky unleashing two days’ worth of rain on the town (and me) , but Tuesday’s scorching sun was perfect for an outdoor party.

In addition, the Provinces of Nova Scotia and British Columbia celebrated 250 years of parliamentary democracy and 150 years since founding respectively, while Quebec City blew out a very remarkable 400 candles. I felt for the Nova Scotians, torn between staying in Halifax and coming to Ottawa for two probably equally huge bashes. But the trip was worth it, wherever Canadians and a few Americans came from.

Red and White ruled the day, from flags flying on buildings and cars to costumes, hats, body paint, stickers and anything that could be made to fit a Canadian theme. Whether one wanted to indulge in the pomp of parades and ceremonies, tank up on good Molson beer in the pubs or spend a wonderful day on the green of Parliament Hill, Ottawa offered the best of everything and much more. The evening concert and fireworks extravaganza wrapped up a gorgeous day. Several new Canadians were sworn in as citizens throughout the country as well.

A more detailed account can be found on Canada.com, while the country begins planning another bigger and better Canada Day!

I thought I should draw your attention to a brief gathering to show support for choice, democracy and liberty! If you’re heading into London on Saturday, the good eggs at I Want A Referendum offer you the chance to send a message of support to the voters of Ireland.

Apparently this is now a warm-up to the afternoon’s main event: the first Anglo-Irish Guinness Guzzling competition. In the green corner - Guido Fawkes, in the blue corner- yours truly. Whoever manages to guzzle 4 pints of Guinness quickest will be crowned champion.

Get involved in this titanic struggle by pledging money per pint drunk. All money raised will go to referendum campaigners from the champion’s home country.

You can donate through I Want a Referendum’s paypal link - which will then payout to either Stuart Wheeler’s fighting fund or the Irish no campaign (after the inevitable Guido victory).

See you tomorrow!

Michael Rock
CF National Chairman

General info:

Irish referendum - send a message

As Ireland’s voters prepare to go to the polls on 12 June to give their verdict on the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, the Irish government is intensifying its propaganda campaign. In particular Irish politicians are increasingly attempting to bully voters into accepting the Treaty by arguing that it would be a “disaster” if the country voted no and that it would lead to Ireland being pushed “to the outside” of the EU. All the polling evidence suggests that these bullying tactics are the most effective way of them achieving a ‘yes’ vote on 12 June.

In order to show solidarity with voters in Ireland I Want a Referendum will be organising a gathering outside the Irish Embassy on Saturday 31 May. We are just one of the many groups who will be organising an event on this day across Europe under the banner of the European Referendum Campaign.

How you can help

At midday on Saturday 31 May we will be organising a short gathering outside the Irish Embassy in London (17 Grosvenor Place, closet tubes: Hyde Park Corner and Victoria). We will have a number of Irish, British and EU flags to hand out, so there will be no need for anyone to bring their own banners or flags. The aim is to send a message of solidarity to Irish voters, not to demonstrate about the denial of our referendum here in the UK. Free cans of Guinness will be available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Madame Tussauds is giving YOU the chance to decide whether Prime Minister Gordon Brown should be immortalised in the world famous attraction.

When Gordon Brown took over from Tony Blair last year, for the first time in a 150 year history, Madame Tussauds took the decision not to immediately create a figure of the current Prime Minister.

Instead we chose to wait for a General Election to confirm Gordon Brown’s status. Ten months later there is still no sign that Mr Brown intends to go to the polls – so Madame Tussauds is holding its own election to let YOU decide the question: Gordon Brown – in or out?

We call upon all members to vote & help with this decision!

Vote here
