Our Patrons & Life President

Tim Barnes, Former TRG Chairman and Executive Director of UCL Advances

Tim Barnes was invited to be one of the patrons of the Society in September 2009.

Tim became Chairman of the Tory Reform Group in January 2006 with the aim of extending the role of the TRG away from Westminster through new groups across the country, greater use of media and wider participation from the membership. Previously he had been a member of the TRG board for four years. In 2001, and again in 2005, he was a senior member of the campaign team behind Ken Clarke MP’s bid for the Conservative Party leadership. He is active within his local constituency association (Holborn and St. Pancras), where he is Treasurer and a ward Chairman.

At present Tim is the Executive Director of UCL Advances, which he joined in August 2007 moving from the for-profit sector where he spent the six previous years running his own business, which helped universities and large corporations to spin-out high technology companies. His client list includes UCL, Birkbeck College, University of Surrey, the London Development Agency, the Centre for Scientific Enterprise Limited (CSEL), the BBC and Reuters.

It is also worth noting that Tim is a graduate of UCL, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a member of the Association of European Technology Transfer Professionals (ASTP), Vice-President of the Friends’ of UCL Trust and a member of the International Advisory Boards for Flywheel Ventures, an early-stage US venture capital company , and Venture Cup Denmark, a national programme that seeks to unearth Danish university entrepreneurs .

Baroness Thatcher LG, OM, PC, FRS

Margaret Thatcher was made a Life Patron of the Society in the early 80’s.

Thatcher was the longest-serving British Prime Minister. She is also the only woman to have served as Prime Minister, one of only two women to have led a major political party in the UK, and one of only two to have held any of the four great offices of state. In 1992, Margaret Thatcher was raised to the House of Lords by the conferment of a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire.

On 21 February 2007 as a statue of her was unveiled in the UK Parliament, Lady Thatcher made a rare and brief speech in the members’ lobby of the House of Commons. She said: “I might have preferred iron – but bronze will do… It won’t rust. And, this time I hope, the head will stay on.”
