The term ahead

This term we have an exciting series of events planned. The annual regulars are still present with the Westminster pub crawl, Christmas dinner, Parliament tour and speaker events. We are also planning a couple of rather different socials! The variety within our term-card should mean that there is something for everyone.

However, this year we have also decided to expand our debate programme. Our hope is that UCLU Conservatives can become the hub for student led debate at UCL and, more broadly, in London. Each ‘Port and Policy’ debate motion will aim to draw lines within the party between Libertarians, Wets, Thatcherites, ‘neo-cons’, High Tories & c. Our hope is that as we debate with each other we will learn more about different kinds of Conservatism and how people follow different intellectual paths in ending up as Conservatives.

With this in mind we also welcome UCL students of other political persuasions to our debates and all we ask is that a level of mutual respect necessary to mature debate is held. We will be exploring some controversial issues and we will not shy away from our expressing our Liberty.

I hope to see (and hear) you at our debates and all our other events.

“I love argument, I love debate. I don’t expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me, that’s not their job.” – Magaret Thatcher

In the interest of free speech, these comments are unmoderated. Please do, however, bear in mind the words of Lady Margaret Thatcher: "If they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left."
